Console vs PC

The age-old feud between console gamers and PC gamers continues. Which system offers a truly superior gaming experience? This argument has been lighting up message boards for years as console gamers, and PC gamers battle it out for the title of “ultimate gaming system”. In actual fact, there is no one answer but rather a set of pros and cons to consider.

If you are in the market for a brand new gaming system and haven’t yet decided on the technology, this helpful guide will help you come to a decision.

Budget

Consoles are restricted operating systems, whereas you can build a PC tailored to your budget. Although consoles have a lower face value and may seem like the budget option, over time, technology progresses, and increasingly advanced PC hardware becomes available at a lower price. The ability to upgrade PC parts as they advance negates the need to purchase a whole new operating system; hence, you will get more for your money in the long run.

If, however, you are looking for a budget console, systems such as the Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series S are excellent options for casual gamers that won’t break the bank. Cheap, entry-level PCs and laptops are not designed for gaming and would struggle to run more demanding titles.

Simplicity

Consoles uphold their reputation for being plug-and-play, no-fuss pieces of technology with no need for comprehensive technical knowledge. Conversely, PCs are suited to hobbyists - those who enjoy the micromanagement of constructing their system with absolute control over the components.

That being said, gaming PC packages are available if you’d prefer the option to upgrade individual parts at a later date but would prefer to omit the complexity of building your own system from scratch.

Frame Rates

Building your gaming PC with a high-rate monitor and top-of-the-line graphics card enables higher frame rates and better graphic visuals - a smoother, more immersive gaming experience. Your standard gaming PC will be able to run games at 4K resolution anywhere from 60 to 100 FPS (frames per second). Of course, this increases depending on the capabilities of your technology, whereas most consoles are locked at 30 FPS.

Exclusivity

Certain games have platform exclusivity - they are titles released solely for specific platforms. This is inherently a business strategy. Although there is a great deal of overlap, some titles will only be available on the platform it was designed for; therefore, it is worth considering the type of games you are interested in and deciding on your system accordingly.

Customisation

As mentioned previously, the option for PC customisation is unparalleled. Considering the amount of choice available, the freedom regarding computer parts and peripherals is an attractive factor when choosing a system. Players can curate a completely personalised setup with a specialised gaming keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers and more.

While console customisation is limited, there are superficial changes you can make to personalise your system, but be warned that if you do choose to modify your console, it may void your warranty.

A game modification is a player-made code that can be incorporated into a game to alter visuals or gameplay. Due to the closed system classification of consoles, players who enjoy modifying their games are generally better suited to a PC.

Flexibility

Historically, consoles were designed with one function at the forefront of their usability - video games. Modern consoles offer a range of functions, including the ability to access online streaming services such as Netflix and YouTube. PCs also have this advantage - your gaming PC is a multi-faceted system, able to function like a regular computer for everyday tasks - web surfing, social media, email, etc. - with the additional power and performance of a console.

PCs offer a more comprehensive range of in-game controls than consoles; however, it is up to the individual in terms of gameplay style. If you enjoy tailoring your settings down to the most intricate details, a PC will offer you this level of control.

It can be argued that the accuracy and intuitive nature of a keyboard and mouse make for increased in-game speed and precision. Nevertheless, if you prefer the comfort of a console controller, it is entirely possible to plug one into your PC.
