Buying designer clothes is an investment in your wardrobe; the pieces you choose should be carefully selected. Opt for items you’ll wear on a regular basis that won’t go out of style. For many people buying a designer item is expensive, and it requires them to save up in advance to be able to afford the purchase. We have some helpful tips on how to afford designer pieces for your wardrobe.

Look for sales

Sales can be a great way to save money when buying any item. However, there are certain pitfalls when it comes to designer sales shopping. It can be easy to fall into the trap of buying items just because they’re on sale and significantly reduced and not because you like, want or need them. This isn’t a wise investment in your wardrobe, designer items you spend a significant amount of money on should be things you absolutely love and will wear regularly. Having a list of things you want to purchase and regularly checking sales to see if they’re reduced is a much better way to utilise sales to your advantage. You’ll only be buying items that you want and need rather than being attracted to the reduced prices.

Consider them an investment

The way you think about your wardrobe can change what you buy and how much you spend. Think about the items you purchase as an investment. You’re investing in clothing and accessories that will last a long time and change the way you look and feel every day. Many designer items can also be sold if you keep them in good condition and find you no longer need them. By shifting your perspective on clothing and the cost, you will be able to more easily change your spending habits and save for new designer items.

Cut down your fast-fashion impulse buys

Part of changing your thinking involves reducing the number of fast fashion items you purchase. It's easy for anyone to go into the high street and pick up a few different fast fashion items as a quick fix to update your wardrobe. However, the cost soon adds up, and the money you spend could have been better allocated to an investment piece. To help reduce your fast-fashion impulse buys, think about how bad buying cheap clothing items is for the environment. You can also have a list of designer items you want to buy; this will help you cut down on your spending and focus on saving to afford these items.

Choose wisely

When you pick designer items wisely, you’ll appreciate the value, which will help you save up for additional designer clothing and accessories. A Proenza Schouler bag or classic dress are items you’ll get lots of use from and feel fabulous wearing. Choose designers that match your personal style, and don’t just opt for things that are currently in fashion or other people are wearing. Designer trends go in and out of fashion just like any other trend. When buying designer pieces, you want to choose items you’ll wear or use regularly, not just something that’s in trend at the moment and will no longer be fashionable in a few months' time.

Consider buying out of season

Another strategy to get your money to go further is to buy items out of season. The demand will be reduced, and you’ll get a better deal or pick up an item in the sale. You might not be able to wear your designer clothes immediately, but you can build up a selection for next year when the season comes back around.

Cut back on unnecessary purchases

If you want enough money to be able to pay for a new designer handbag or a pair of designer boots, you might need to cut back on your spending. Limiting the money spent on going out and eating dinner or having drinks with friends is a quick way to save money. Don’t completely cut out everything; this will make it much more challenging to stick to, and you’ll soon become bored and frustrated. The best thing you can do to save is to keep the money you've saved in a separate account or space in your banking app, so you won't be tempted to dip into it while feeling impulsive.
